A New Moon Ritual for People Who Never Stop
Twenty minutes, once a month, in the dark. A simple new moon practice for founders, executives and creators who are always in motion.
The new moon is the darkest night of the lunar month. The moon sits between the earth and the sun, its lit face turned away from us, and the sky is at its emptiest.
For most of human history this darkness meant rest. Fields were planted by the moon. Work slowed. People gathered, told stories and waited for the light to return.
Modern working life has no new moon. The screen is always lit. The quarter always needs closing. Many of the leaders we work with have not had a truly empty evening in years, and they feel it as a kind of thinness: busy, capable and slightly absent from their own lives.
This ritual is our answer. It takes twenty minutes, once a month.
Before you begin
Choose the evening of the new moon or the night after. Put your phone in another room. You will need a candle, a sheet of paper, a pen and, if you have it, a drop of Ascend Oil or TerraSoul.
1. Darken the room (2 minutes)
Turn off the lights and sit with the candle unlit. Let your eyes adjust. Notice how much you can still see in the dark, and how much you do not need to see.
2. Arrive in the body (3 minutes)
Warm a drop of oil between your palms and breathe it in slowly. Place one hand on your belly and one on your heart. Breathe in for a count of five and out for a count of seven, until your breath feels like your own again.
3. Light the candle and look back (5 minutes)
Light the candle. Write down, without editing, everything the last month asked of you. Projects, conversations, decisions, worries. Fill the page if you need to.
Then read it back and circle the one thing that cost you the most energy. Do not judge it. Just see it.
4. Choose one intention (5 minutes)
Turn the paper over. Write a single sentence in the present tense about how you choose to be in the coming cycle. Not what you will achieve. How you will be.
I lead from rest, not from fear. I protect my mornings. I let people help me.
One sentence is enough. The new moon is a seed, and a seed is small.
5. Close in silence (5 minutes)
Read your intention aloud three times, slowly. Then sit with the candle for the remaining minutes, doing nothing at all. When you are ready, blow it out and go to sleep without returning to your phone.
Carrying it forward
Fold the paper and keep it somewhere you will see it: your wallet, your desk drawer, your bedside table. On the full moon, about two weeks later, read it again and notice what has grown.
You do not need to believe anything about the moon for this to work. What the ritual offers is a rhythm: a monthly moment of darkness in a life that has forgotten it. Leaders who keep it tell us the same thing. They make fewer decisions from exhaustion, and they remember, once a month, who they are when no one needs anything from them.
